According to UNICEF, 1 in 4 girls are married by the time they turn 18, a societal barrier that impedes every young girl’s aspiration for an autonomous life. In Varanasi (a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh), where patriarchy is deeply entrenched, with severe gender disparities and traditional norms subordinating women to men, the situation is no different. Young, rural girls are often discouraged from pursuing higher education and employment opportunities, are married early, are limited to the roles of caregiving, and are highly dependent on their husbands and children for any socio-economic support. Widespread poverty further compounds this reality; when resources are scarce, a girl child’s education is often the first to be sacrificed.

Solution

To make rural girls in Varanasi independent and self-reliant, this initiative is providing scholarships to these girls and promoting their higher education (graduation/post-graduation). Each scholarship enables a girl to unlock a multitude of opportunities that extend far beyond financial assistance: it gives her the confidence to pursue her dreams and goals, the qualifications to access dignified employment, and the agency to make informed life choices. 

Long-term impact

This initiative not only supports the rural girls’ educational needs but also puts them on a path to independence and self-reliance. By delaying early marriage, strengthening their voice within the household, and expanding their economic prospects, the scholarship becomes a catalyst for long-term empowerment.
